Is it just my family, or do growing kids always like to snack? I think most children like to graze, and when they hit a growth spurt, you just can’t feed them enough. Being a stickler about good nutrition and healthy eating, I am always on the lookout for good ideas for yummy easy snacks that appeal to kids. Are your children picky eaters? Sometimes just serving a healthy snack in a colorful ramekin is enough to get them to try something different and nutritious. The Fiestaware 8oz. ramekins are a great kitchen accessory and really come in handy for serving little people sized snacks. What’s better than a healthy serving of fresh organic fruits or veggies in a brightly colored dish with a separate dipping sauce dish to match?
I couldn’t live without my supply of brightly colored ramekins. My children use them at almost every meal. Some of our favorite things to put in the little dishes are: petite cut organic carrots, celery sticks, grape tomatoes, small broccoli florets (“little trees”) and cucumber slices. Another ramekin can be used to hold a dip that the kids can share. If we’re feeling lazy we use Ken’s bottled Blue Cheese or Ranch dressing, and if I’ve had a little extra time, I’ll make hummus. The kids love it and usually finish every last vegetable. Many times, there is dip or hummus left over and I just cover the ramekin with Glad Press & Seal and put it in the refrigerator for another snack or for their salad or chicken at dinner time.
Since kids love to dip, another favorite is sliced apples in one ramekin with either peanut butter or caramel fruit dipping sauce in another. A few other all time favorites in our household are mandarin oranges, frozen blueberries or raspberries, or fresh cut organic strawberries. Many would argue that those mandarin orange fruit cups are easier than putting them in a ramekin, but I’d have to disagree. Buying a can of mandarin oranges is cheaper and makes a lot less mess when opening. If the kids don’t finish…again put Glad Press and Seal over the top and pop it into the fridge for later. It may sound silly, but we’ve found a new use for International Delight Vanilla Coffee Creamer (you can buy sugar and fat-free versions.) Frozen raspberries or blueberries in a ramekin with a drizzle of creamer over the top is a taste sensation for children and adults. I’ve been known to join my kids for this delicious treat. They even like it for dessert!
